Simpsons actor Hank Azaria has apparently retired from voicing Apu

Hank Azaria will retire from voicing the character of Apu on The Simpsons, according to an interview out of the 2020 TCAs.

Like the majority of the core Simpson’s cast, Azaria voices multiple roles in the long-running animated comedy, including Superintendent Chalmers, Moe, Comics Person, and Chief Wiggum. However his role as Kwik-E-Mart owner and Indian immigrant, Apu, has actually triggered the program considerable debate over the past few years, reaching a peak in late 2017 with comic Hari Kondabolu’s documentary The Problem with Apu

The Problem with Apu featured conversation and interviews with South Asian comics, celebrities, and academics on the stereotypes of South Asian peoples that were perpetuated by the Simpsons character. Kondabolu has said that he focused on Apu and The Simpsons as an extensively identifiable “entry point into a larger discussion about the representation of marginalized groups & why this is necessary.”

The Simpsons‘ effort to respond to the documentary, 2018’s episode “No Excellent Read Goes Unpunished” reignited the argument. Kondabolu’s critics accused him of not having the ability to take a joke, while others thought about the episode itself dismissive and out of character.

Soon after, Azaria voiced his determination to step aside from the character, either to enable an actor of West Indian descent to take the role, approximately that Apu could be retired, as other Simpsons characters have (although typically out of regard for the death of their voice star).

” I think the most crucial thing is we have to listen to South Asian individuals, Indian individuals in this nation when they discuss what they feel and what they think of this character and what their American experience of this character has been,” Azaria informed Stephen Colbert in a The Late Show interview.

” All we understand there is I won’t be doing the voice anymore, unless there’s someway to transition it or something,” Azaria stated after panel for his IFC program Brockmire(through Slashfilm). “All of us decided together,” he continued. “We all settled on it. We all seem like it’s the best thing and good about it.”

Azaria included that no choice has been made on what to do with Apu’s character, other than that he will no longer be voiced by Azaria.

Polygon has reached out to Fox Television for verification.
