Here’s the logo for Trump’s Space Force, and it looks awfully familiar

President Donald Trump on Friday revealed the main logo design for the Space Force, the latest branch of the armed forces and part of the existing United States Air Force department, in a tweet.

The Area Force, a fixation of Trump’s throughout his presidency, came true last month when Congress passed a $738 billion military bill that created the sixth branch of the military. And now the Flying force is accountable for branding, consistent design, and the different other requirements involved with creating a new military.

After assessment with our Great Military Leaders, designers, and others, I am happy to provide the new logo design for the United States Space Force, the Sixth Branch of our Splendid Military! pic.twitter.com/TC8pT4yHFT

Nevertheless, the logo design appears to borrow greatly from the fictional logo design of Starfleet from the Star Trek universe.

Singing Trump critic and previous Star Trek cast member George Takei also weighed in.

Expert and former nationwide security policy advisor John Noonan, who belonged to the USAF, commented on Twitter soon after the statement to point out that the Area Force logo, while comparable in design to the Starfleet one, remains in truth based on an existing Flying force command logo.

For those excitedly tweeting that Trump stole the Star Trek logo design!!!!, the spot on the left was the existing Air Force Command logo.

Adding another wrinkle to the situation is that Trump’s political action committee, the Trump Make America Great Again Committee, was polling citizens back in 2018 about which Area Force logos they liked the best. And the 6 options provided all look drastically various than the end outcome we have today, with quite a few including NASA-inspired iconography and type deals with alongside retro-futurist aesthetics.

It’s not completely clear how the team accountable for branding the Space Force went from that to what Trump revealed this afternoon. Here we are.

The Trump/Pence PAC is currently trying to monetize the Space Force:

Although, as one user on Twitter kept in mind, the designers did seem to take some cues from the NASA logo design, primarily the exact placement of the stars that appear to have actually been copied over straight.

CBS, which owns the rights to Star Trek, was not right away available for comment.
