[Ed. note: This post contains mild spoilers for Birds of Prey.]

In Birds of Prey, Harley has a taxidermied beaver, and she talks to it as if it might talk back. Cassandra Cain likewise takes rather a shine to the rodent, and the furry item is amongst the survivors when Harley’s location gets blown to smithereens.

The motion picture does not provide more description than that, so you might not be blamed for questioning if you ‘d missed out on something. Bernie isn’t simply a non sequitur: He’s a character from the comics.

Particularly, Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti’s 2014 Harley Quinn comic. Bernie debuted in Harley Quinn # 1, drawn by Chad Hardin, as one of the “treasures” she ‘d gotten from her storage space prior to moving to Coney Island. And she didn’t simply talk to him: He talked back.

Conner and Palmiotti waited more than a year to provide readers Bernie’s full origin story, as drawn by Stephane Roux. Harley called Bernie after her first crush, a distressed young boy called Bernie Celebration. The human Bernie tossed Harley’s bully in front of a truck– “the most romantic gesture I ever saw,” according to Harley– and got sent out away to juvenile detention “fer, like, ever.”

Bernie: Hey, if you could eliminate a single person in this space, who would it be?

Desiring something to remember him by, Harley burglarized the searching trophy space of his moms and dads’ home and absconded with a taxidermied beaver which she, naturally, called Bernie.
