H.P. Lovecraft’s stories are full of transcendent and weird animals running into parts of daily life. Based upon the first trailer, that’s precisely what we can anticipate from the new HBO series Lovecraft Country, too.

The series, based on the 2016 Matt Ruff novel of the same name, follows Atticus Turner (Jonathan Majors), a black World War II veteran and dedicated sci-fi geek, whose daddy is abducted by a mystical cult called the Order of the Ancient Dawn. The cult’s head office, and where they’re keeping Turner’s daddy, is in deep in the woods of rural New England, in place called LovecraftCountry

.

The books itself puts this story in addition to numerous other vignettes following different buddies and family of Atticus. All of these stories base on their own in as a sort of anthology, while also looping into the bigger secret of the Order of the Ancient Dawn and what they desire with Atticus and hisfamily The trailer cuts together minutes of numerous of the book’s vignettes and teases some of the supernatural scary that makes Ruff’s unique thrilling.

However there’s more than otherworldly wicked in LovecraftCountry The book offers in the very same strangeness and extra-dimensional monsters that Lovecraft’s original work did, it also turns the upsetting and tough tradition of the author on its head.

Lovecraft himself was an outspoken racist and anti-Semite in his individual life, and those feeling bled through into much of his writing. Ruff’s unique pulls that tradition into the story and parallels it straight with America’s own racist history particularly around the Jim Crow-era south. This kind of layering falls right into the wheelhouse one of the show’s executive manufacturers, Us and Go out director Jordan Peele.

Signing Up With Peele is J.J. Abrams, who will also work as executive manufacturer, and series creator Misha Greene (Underground). Lovecraft Country will debut on HBO at some point this August.
