Google has spotlighted its favorite Android titles from the past year as part of its Best Games of 2020 awards, and Genshin Impact has taken home the top prize.

MiHoYo’s freemium action-RPG was named Best Game for delivering a “compelling, accessible, genre-defining” experience. The title, which is also available on console platforms like PS4 and Nintendo Switch, launched in September this year and grossed an estimated $250 million in its first month.

In the other categories, Dream League Soccer 2021 grabbed the User’s Choice award, while Brawlhalla was crowned the Best Competitive Game. Cookies Must Die, a fast-paced action platformer from Rebel Twins, won out in the Best Indies category, and Disney Frozen Adventures: Customise the Kingdom captured the Best Pick Up & Play award.

Finally, Fancade, a free-to-play game creation platform, was awarded the Best Game Changers prize for “creating imaginative new ways to play,” rounding off the winners’ list for 2020.

Other game-winners included Legends of Runeterra, Disco Elysium, Dandara Trials of Fear, and Apple Arcade’s Sneaky Sasquatch. Pokémon GO was recognized for reinventing its popular outdoor location-based game with at-home experiences. To reward the winners, Apple created an App Store logo set into recycled aluminum, with the winner engraved on the other side. I was able to interview four of the teams that won gaming awards.

Apple has named the App Store’s best games and apps of 2020, and Genshin Impact is the winner of the iPhone Game of the Year award. According to the measurement firm, the game had a $100 million budget. It enabled Chinese game studio MiHoYo to become recognized globally — and reap an estimated $393 million in revenues in its first two months Sensor Tower.

I liked how the winners were from all over the world, showing some of the diversity of the 1.7 million App Store developers.

This award for Genshin Impact comes a day after it won the Google Play Game of the Year. As mentioned, the title cost $100 million to make, and it has recouped more than $393 million since its debut on September 28.
