SHADECRAFT in development at Netflix

Shadecraft, the forthcoming Image Comics series from creators Joe HendersonLee GarbettAntonio Fabela, and Simon Bowland, could be coming to the small screen. THR reports that Netflix has picked up the comic for development as a new streaming series, with Henderson and The Expanse writer/producer Georgia Lee co-writing the pilot for the series.

Here’s how Image Comics describes Shadecraft:

Zadie Lu is afraid of her own shadow. She’s a teenager, so she REALLY should have grown out of it by now, right? But something weird is happening in her small town. Zadie could swear the shadows are coming to life. Watching her. Trying to KILL her. But how do you fight something you can’t even touch? And how does all of this tie into her FAMILY, of all things?

The adaptation of Shadecraft continues the relationship between Netflix and Henderson, who currently serves as a co-showrunner for the streamer’s Lucifer series based on the Vertigo Comics series. The previous Image Comics series from Henderson, Garbett, and co., Skyward, has already been optioned by Sony, with Henderson writing the screenplay for the potential film adaptation.

With its young protagonist and the presence of supernatural threats in a small town, Shadecraft has a lot in common with another popular Netflix series, Stranger Things. With the cast of that series aging and its run potentially winding down, it makes sense that Netflix would look to develop a series with a similar vibe.

The first issue of Shadecraft is due out in stores on Wednesday, March 31st. The preorder cutoff date for the issue is next Monday, March 8th, so there’s still plenty of time to ensure you get a copy from your local comic shop.
