The legendary Evolution fighting game tournament series popularly known as Evo has been acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment and RTS.

The acquisition was announced via the Evo Google News and the Sony Interactive Entertainment blog. There it was detailed that the tournament series was bought together with RTS, a new esports venture from Endeavor.

Sony also announced that this year Evo would take the form of Evo Online, a free online tournament series that will take place August 6-8 and August 13-15. While it is usually a one-weekend event, it will likely offset the large number of attendees expected to attend a free online event.

Evo Online will feature tournaments for four separate fighting games this year: Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, Tekken 7, Mortal Kombat 11 and Guilty Gear -Strive-. Notably, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a title for which Evo is considered a major event, is missing.

This is likely due to Smash Ultimate’s questionable netcode, which significantly hampers online events. It has been speculated that the Sony acquisition would mean exclusives on other consoles would no longer be supported, but this was clarified in a tweet from Evo employee Mark Julio.

This announcement follows a period of uncertainty for the Evo Championship Series after pandemic complications prompted them to announce Evo Online 2020, featuring Killer Instinct, Skullgirls, Them’s Fightin ‘Herds and Mortal Kombat 11 as the main line-up. up.

Evo Online 2020 was canceled, however, because weeks before the event was due to take place, allegations of sexual misconduct came out against Evo co-founder Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar. Evo quickly removed Cuellar from their brand and the other co-founders. remain involved with the series.

Both Evo and Sony have emphasized their commitment to keep the Evolution Championship Series as it always has been, an open-format tournament that brings the fighting game community together and incorporates it into an authentic and inclusive tournament series. Hopefully, this will keep the series’ iconic moments flowing, like Daigo’s epic parries in Evo Moment # 37.
