The first Space Jam movie starred Michael Jordan in one of the most unexpected crossovers of all time: Looney Tunes and the NBA. The film provided a fictionalized version of the events between Michael’s retirement and comeback between 1993 and 1995. Now LeBron James has led the way and the new film is pushing the franchise into the modern era – here’s everything you need to know about Space Jam: A new legacy.

When will Space Jam: A New Legacy be released in theaters?

Space Jam: A New Legacy will be released on July 23, 2021.

The film will be released in the US a little earlier, on July 16.

Warner Bros, the film’s distributor, has a deal with HBO Max, meaning that all of its movies will also hit the platform, so A New Legacy will be on HBO Max for a full month starting July 16.

HBO Max is not yet available in the UK which means other streaming services will be used to stream the movie.

As a result, the film will likely arrive on a streaming platform shortly after release in the UK, despite being released later than in the US.

Previous Warner Bros films, such as Wonder Woman 1984 and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, have appeared on Sky Cinema and NOW TV.

However, it is not clear whether this will be the streaming platform of choice for Space Jam: A New Legacy. Express.co.uk will release further details of the streaming as they become available.

LeBron’s oldest son and daughter are played by Ceyair J. Wright and Harper Leigh Alexander.

As with the original Space Jam, there are cameos from a host of NBA and WBNA players, including Klay Thompson, Kyrie Irving, Kyle Kuzma, Diana Taurasi, and Chiney Ogwumike.

Looney Tunes also appear in the film, focusing on the usual suspects. Bugs Bunny, Marvin the Martian, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig will all make up an unusual basketball team.

The Looney Tunes characters are voiced by Jeff Bergman, Eric Bauza and Bob Bergman, with guest stars Gabriel Iglesias and Zendaya voicing Speedy Gonzales and Lola Bunny respectively.

What is the plot of Space Jam: A New Legacy?

LeBron James will fight to keep his son from getting stuck in a computer world, unlike Michael Jordan who fights for his own career in the original movie.

LeBron’s son Dom runs away from his father after an argument and is zapped into a server vortex.

The server is commanded by Al-G Rhythm, who decides that LeBron can only release his son by playing a game of basketball.

He sends LeBron to ‘the losers’, the Looney Tunes, while the movie’s villain has a superior squad.

In the trailer, it looks like the movie has more animation than the original Space Jam, with LeBron becoming its own Looney Tunes character. For the final showdown, the cartoons transform into CGI versions of themselves, and LeBron returns to his human self.
