Android may be the most popular operating system in the world, but it looks like fans of these devices will have a lot less choice this year. That’s because LG has just announced its shocking decision to withdraw from the hugely competitive phone market to focus on other activities.

Rumors had circulated for months that LG was considering a shutdown, and it has now been confirmed that LG is explaining that the smartphone market has become “incredibly competitive”.

It’s a huge blow to the market as the South Korean company has been making Android smartphones for over 10 years and was once the world’s third largest phone company.

But things have changed since it peaked in 2013, with companies such as Oppo, Huawei, Xiaomi and OnePlus all releasing a large number of devices in this now saturated market.

Samsung is still leading the way with the Korean company that shipped more than 250 million devices last year, while LG sold only 28 million.

LG is thought to have lost about £ 3.3 billion to its phone company in the past six years and has clearly decided that enough is enough.

LG Wing

“LG’s strategic decision to exit the incredibly competitive mobile phone industry allows the company to focus resources on growth areas such as electric auto parts, connected devices, smart homes, robotics and artificial intelligence,” said a statement.

While they may have lost some of their popularity, many will miss out on the innovations LG has brought to the market.

LG is known for some pretty crazy concepts. In 2015 it unveiled the LG Flex with a curved screen that really bent and more recently we saw the release of the LG Wing spinning to reveal a dual screen for enhanced multitasking.

The company also recently unveiled its new roll-up phone, which has a screen that converts into a tablet. Unlike Samsung’s bendable Galaxy Fold phone, LG’s concept rolls up like a piece of paper, meaning there’s no crease on the screen.

The company had said this phone would be released sometime this year, although it’s unclear if it will ever hit stores.

If you already own a LG phone, it appears that you are still being taken care of and LG confirms that they will continue to provide “service support and software updates for customers of existing mobile products for a period of time”.
