MLB The Show 21 is multiplatform and on Xbox Game Pass because the competition itself aimed for it

The news that MLB The Show 21 would not only be no longer exclusive to PlayStation, but would also launch on Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass on day one certainly raised a few eyebrows, especially as the developer is none other than Sony’s own studio in San Diego.

If you guessed it wasn’t really Sony, but the Major League Baseball licensee, a statement from a Sony spokesperson to Inverse so much confirmed.

As part of the goal for this year’s game, MLB decided to bring the franchise to more players and baseball fans. This decision provides a unique opportunity to further establish MLB The Show as the premier baseball video game brand.

It’s unlikely we’ll see any other Xbox Game Pass releases from Sony in the near future.

MLB The Show 21 launches April 20 on Xbox One, Xbox Series S | X, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 with full cross-play functionality. However, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate users can also play it on Android devices (and soon iOS) via cloud streaming.

Below we’ve added a compilation of improvements that the developer has confirmed are in this year’s edition.

  • Learn the ropes so you too can make impressive catches and improve your gameplay. We’ve added a route-to-ball indicator to help you in the field, improved the throw accuracy gauge to help you show off your cannon, and built-in assistants to make jumps and dives more intuitive. New to MLB The Show, Casual mode teaches you all of The Show’s gameplay mechanics, while hitting dingers to your heart’s content.
  • In MLB The Show 21, your ball player can be a two-way player for the first time, increasing flexibility in the player’s position. Enjoy an updated player progression system that emphasizes adaptability and variety. Finally, use your centralized ball player in Road to the Show, online in Diamond Dynasty, Programs and Moments.
  • Do you want bat flips? We have bat flips. In fact, we’ve added over 100 new personalized bat flips, home run swings, and bat tosses. We also have 140 new battle modes, 250 updated battle modes, 160 new pitching animations, 180 revamped pitching animations, and over 1,000 new fielding animations.
  • Fans of MLB The Show have been patiently waiting for the opportunity to build their dream ballpark in-game, and we’re happy to say the wait is almost over. MLB The Show 21 gives you the ability to build and customize stadiums with over 1000 pieces ranging from dirt posts, signs, buildings and more. The developers have designed specific stadium kits ranging from realistic to fantasy, allowing players to create custom layouts, dimensions, wall heights and more, while using the created stadiums in both Diamond Dynasty and Franchise modes. With an internet connection, the fun doesn’t stop there as players can also share, edit and play in stadiums created by other MLB The Show community members.
