Benny Safdie joins Rachel McAdams in Are You There God? It’s me, Margaret adjustment

The Uncut gemstones co-director Benny Safdie is no longer a hidden gem in Hollywood. Of his memorable turn Good time, which he also directed with his brother Josh Safdie, to its recent cast in Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobithe filmmaker is on fire. Now he can add a lead role in an adaptation of a beloved novel to that list.

Safdie will join Kelly Fremon Craig Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret, based on Judy Blume’s eponymous classic. He plays Margaret’s father, Herb. Ant man star Abby Ryder Fortson will play the titular Margaret, while Rachel McAdams will play her mother, Barbara. Kathy Bates rounds out the cast as Margaret’s grandmother, Sylvia.

In the new sixth grade, Are you there God? It’s me, Margaret, sixth grader Margaret moves from the city to the suburbs and begins to question her faith and her life as she enters puberty. Because of her parents’ interfaith marriage, she grows up without any fixed religion and starts looking for one. Herb, Benny Safie’s character, is a Jewish insurance agent, while Barbara from McAdams is a Christian housewife who loves to paint.
