Netflix is growing as the place to be for compelling documentary series. From 2020 Tiger King until this year Crime scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel, the streamer pumps out true-crime entertainment like no other. Their next venture looks just as compelling as the others, with Netflix tackling the infamous Son of Sam case.
In The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness, we’ll see the bizarre murder case that became a lifelong obsession for Maury Terry, a journalist who believed the case was related to a satanic cult. Watch the trailer below:
The hunt for the “Son of Sam” captivated the world in the late 1970s, but the story behind one of America’s most notorious serial killers has so far been virtually forgotten. While the arrest and conviction of David Berkowitz ended the nightmare for many New Yorkers, for journalist and Ultimate Evil author Maury Terry the real mystery had only just begun. Terry, convinced that Berkowitz hadn’t acted alone, would spend decades trying to prove that the web of darkness behind the murders ran deeper than anyone could have imagined – and his search for that elusive truth would ultimately cost him everything. Filmmaker Joshua Zeman (CROPSEY, MURDER MOUNTAIN) draws on archival news, conversations with those closest to the investigation, and Terry’s own words and files to tell a cautionary tale about a man who went down a rabbit hole and never came out. But was Maury Terry just chasing ghosts – or are the true Sons of Sam still there …
The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness premieres on Netflix on May 5.
