With the current health crisis leaving most of us locked indoors, we’ve never been more dependent on services like Zoom, Google Meet, Teams and Skype. Endless video chats with friends, colleagues and family have kept us all in touch, but it is very likely that many PC users are quite shocked by how awful the webcams are tucked into their laptops.

With only a small amount of space to fit these mini video recorders, most technology companies are opting for nice low-resolution cameras when designing their next-generation laptops. For example, Microsoft’s new Surface laptop only comes with a standard 720p webcam, and most Windows 10 machines offer similar specs.

Even Apple only has a 720p FaceTime camera in its latest models, and while quality is improved through the latest M1 processor, it still lags far behind the 1080p TrueDepth camera featured on the iPad Pro.

Now it looks like Microsoft wants to help improve our video calling with an update that is sure to be welcomed by the millions of users.

As noted by the team on Windows Newestit looks like a future upgrade called Windows 10 Sun Valley 21H2 will allow users to tweak the settings on their webcam. Until now this is something that has not been easy, but it is about to change.

Once installed, users can adjust the brightness and contrast of their cameras via sliding menu bars that should improve image quality and make your room and face look a lot less gloomy.

You even get a preview image of what you look like so you have time to get the perfect look before you go online.

It’s a good update, but that’s not all Microsoft has planned.

In addition to adjusting the camera settings, better privacy settings have also been added.

This means you can more easily see when apps, such as Google Chrome or Teams, are accessing your camera.

When third-party applications have taken control of your webcam, you get an instant notification in the taskbar showing exactly what’s going on.

There is no exact start time for this update, although Windows Latest says they are currently in the testing phase and should release on PCs later this year.
