Bang & Olufsen has launched its latest wireless headphones – the Beoplay Portal – designed to maximize your next gaming session on the Xbox Series X and Series X launched last year. Next-gen Xbox stock (like its counterpart, PlayStation 5) is still frustratingly low in the UK right now, but if you’ve been lucky enough to get one of these consoles, Bang & Olufsen promises your immersion a boost to give with these new cans.

Developed as part of Microsoft’s recently relaunched ‘Designed For Xbox’ program, the Beoplay Portal combines the audio performance you’d expect from Bang & Olufsen with seamless connectivity with the latest Xbox team gaming kit. In addition to quick pairing, the Beoplay Portal offers a microphone array to ensure teammates can hear your commands / annoyed swearing without the need for an unsightly microphone boom that is standard on most gaming headsets.

Like B & O’s excellent PX wireless headphones, the Beoplay Portal packs a serious audio grunt. According to Bang & Olufsen, these £ 449 headphones easily meet the ‘Dolby Atmos For Headphones’ standard when it comes to surround sound, whether you’re watching a movie, a cinematic TV show or playing games late into the night. .

Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation technology is in place and correct to eliminate any background distractions – likely leaving you feeling hopelessly isolated playing the latest installment in the Resident Evil series. A transparency mode has also been added that allows you to quickly chat with anyone nearby without taking off the headphones. While all of these features can be extremely useful if you dive into the latest AAA launch on Xbox … they are also fairly standard for high-end wireless headphones and will prove to be equally useful if you’re using the Beoplay Portal on the go.

Likewise, there’s also a 24-hour battery life between charges, so you don’t have to worry about a red flashing battery icon on your Call Of Duty: Warzone marathon or next long-haul flight.

Bang & Olufsen allows listeners to set up a customized set of touch controls while in-game, so adjustments to the microphones and volume balance between the game and the chat room can be handled with a few quick taps on the side of your earcups – just start your gameplay with digging through an app menu.

When it comes to comfort, Bang & Olufsen has seemingly spared no expense. The padding of the ear cups is made of memory foam wrapped in lambskin. There is a subtle protrusion on the back of each pillow, which adapts to the shape of the user’s head, increasing comfort and eliminating sound leakage, the Scandinavian company claims. Elsewhere, the inner headband contains offset padding designed to relieve pressure on the top of the head. This padding is covered with a bamboo fiber, which B&O has chosen for its breathability.

Sitting on the scale at only 282 grams, the Beoplay Portal headphones are among the lightest in the wireless category, ideal for hours of continuous use.

“Beoplay Portal is the first of its kind – a wireless headset that combines gaming technology with the distinctive sound, design and craftsmanship of Bang & Olufsen,” said Dorte Vestergaard, director and head of Bang & Olufsen’s On-The-Go category. “Our designers and engineers have worked tirelessly to create headphones that meet the advanced technology needs of the gaming community and also excel in everyday use.”

Gamers looking to upgrade their audio with these shiny new headphones will have to wait until April 29, 2021 when they launch in the UK. Color options include Black Anthracite, Gray Mist and Navy. Whether these new cans are as easy to grab at checkout as the Xbox Series X remains to be seen…. but with fingers crossed, there is plenty of supply to go around.
