Pirates of the Caribbean: Johnny Depp called in ‘a favor’ to get a Beatles star cameo

During the scripting and pre-production of Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Jack Sparrow star Johnny Depp wanted to bring someone special on board. In the second movie, Dead Man’s Chest, Jack’s father, Teague Sparrow, was introduced. Teague was played by rocker Keith Richards – the inspiration behind Sparrow’s iconic mannerisms. Depp wanted to expand this family of rockers, so he contacted a member of The Beatles.

Jerry Bruckheimer, director and executive producer of the Pirates franchise, explained during a behind-the-scenes look: “So we needed another rocker and Paul McCartney was at the top of our list.

And Johnny said, ‘Well, I have his number.’ Johnny of course has Paul McCartney’s number So he started texting him And it went back and forth And then [Paul] said yes. So we were super happy. “

Bruckheimer praised the star, saying, “Paul McCartney is an icon. One of the world’s greatest songwriters, musicians alive. We are lucky that he is friends with Johnny. “

He then revealed how the partnership came about, adding, “Johnny did him a favor and he did Johnny a favor by starring in this movie.”

McCartney had a small cameo early in the movie that showed him incarcerated in prison at the same time as his cousin, Jack Sparrow.

His character was also called Jack Sparrow and turned out to be the namesake of Depp’s character.

The 78-year-old spoke about getting involved in the film on set: “I’ve known Johnny for a while and I’ve always admired him as Jack Sparrow.

‘He said,’ I would like you to be in the next one! ‘I said,’ What, I’m a pirate? ‘ And he said, “Yes, you can, we’ll have a lot of fun!” So he tied me up. “

McCartney added, “I love it. I mean it’s great, John has done me a lot of fun in the past, so this is my way of paying it back.”

The British star found some real inspiration for his character, which he used as the basis for his short performance in the film.

He said, “I started to tell [Depp] about my Liverpool relatives, and I focused on this Uncle Jack of mine.

‘So he said,’ Yeah, channel Uncle Jack. “I said he always told jokes, he was the family joke teller, and last night before we started filming we had a meeting, had a little food, a little wine, and kicked it. Johnny came up with a lot of ideas and I turned it down.

McCartney said Depp left that night and typed the entire exchange between Jack Sparrow and his uncle, adding that he was “very impressed” with how quickly he wrote it.

The film’s directors, Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, later revealed that they were not 100 percent satisfied with what McCartney’s looks look like.

After the initial costume adaptation, they revealed that Macca didn’t look like himself enough during character.

Rønning said, “There he is. And he is unrecognizable. I got nervous because no one will see it a certain way. It felt like we had gone too far. “

Rønning added, “It was still great. But he became too much of a pirate. We had to tone it down a bit and dig out its own features. “

Despite how different he looked physically, the directors were happy that McCartney had kept his Liverpool accent.

They said, “We were happy about that, it was part of recognizing him.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean movies are now available on Disney Plus.
