For those who haven’t kept up, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is a major upgrade / refresh that takes place 1,000 years after the events of the original PSO2. The update introduces a revamped graphics engine, a new larger world, and more. Here is the official overview …

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is our biggest update yet!

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Phantasy Star Online, we’re striving to even greater heights, reshaping the story, gameplay, graphics engine, and character creation system. PSO2 is reborn as an open-field online RPG, with an updated combat system and game system to match!

The two universes of PSO2: NGS and PSO2 co-exist!

You can continue to enjoy the original PSO2 even after PSO2: NGS is released. Accounts that have played PSO2 can switch between PSO2: NGS and PSO2. However, because the game system differs enormously, we would like to explain below what exactly changes with PSO2: NGS.

Create even more beautiful characters with the new and improved graphics engine!

With the new graphics come improved character models. In addition to the functions present in the current character creation system, you now have even more detailed options, such as changing the shine of your character’s skin. Characters can now move their fingers too! Plus, you can wear more accessories – and change their location – to create even more personalized characters.

Finally, the graphics core of PSO2 is also being overhauled, so that characters created with the PSO2: NGS system can also be used within PSO2. Of course, ALL information about creating characters from PSO2 (including items associated with emotes and other previously registered data) is compatible with PSO2: NGS!

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis will be released on PC (via the Microsoft Store) and Xbox One sometime in 2021.
