Have you ever been to an important work meeting only to realize that your device is dangerously low on power – the horror! – and is there no charger at hand? Worse, have you ever been cut off in the middle of an important video call because you missed the blinking red battery icon in the corner of your screen? If you’ve ever faced these dangers of working from home, Google Meet has good news for you.

Google’s popular video conferencing service has just launched a great new battery saver feature that rivals like Zoom and Microsoft Teams may want to take a closer look at. The handy new addition to Google Meet’s arsenal allows a device to limit the number of resources used during a call.

In dubbed saver mode, Google Meet puts a limit on the amount of processing power and data it takes to make a call, all of which affect the amount of battery needed for a meeting. This nifty new tool has been added to Google Meet in the latest set of features and enhancements for the service for April.

Speaking of the position in a message online, Google said, “Enable Meet Saver mode before a Meet video call to reduce data usage and conserve battery. Saver mode throttles CPU performance so your device’s charge lasts longer.”

So even though your device is running low … you don’t have to join a meeting late because you were looking for a charger, or if you are on the go and worried about your 4G data allowance draining , you can still visit the meeting.

To enable Meet Saver, here’s what you need to do …

• Open the Meet app

• Tap the Menu button, these are the three vertical dots

• Go to the Settings section

• Enable the Restrict data usage option

• Then just go to your next video call

Meet Saver isn’t the only new addition for rival Zoom and Microsoft Teams coming in April.

This month, Google Meet also got new Q&A and polling functionality for Android devices, as well as new Android security checks, along with an option in iOS that allows moderators to end a meeting for all attendees.

Google regularly adds new features to Meet, with January being the only month in 2021 that Mountain View company did not release a new set of additional features and enhancements to its Meet service.

Google Meet is available to anyone with a Google account, which can be created for free. Some features will eventually be limited on free accounts, but these restrictions have been put on hold due to the ongoing public health crisis and focus on working and studying from home.
