UPDATE TWO – FRIDAY APRIL 16: Google’s down reports are on the rise again after an outage earlier this week.

Down Detector recorded major spikes in reported issues today (Friday, April 16) with a range of leading Google services – from Google Search to Gmail to Google Drive.

Other popular offerings from Mountain View, such as Google Classroom, YouTube and Google Calendar, would also be affected.

However, the streams of issues reported on Twitter show that the latest Google teething problems are mostly affecting American users.

At the time of writing, downdetector.com has recorded a spike of more than 2,500 notifications from Google down.

Independent Down Detector Outage Monitor has recorded a spike in reports on a Google Drive, Google and Google Classroom not currently working. These reports are widely shared on social media, with Down Detector clocking thousands of users about the issues every minute

At the time of writing, Down Detector has recorded a spike of over 5,000 reports of Google Drive issues alone – with the vast majority of the reported issues being related to app issues.

Google has confirmed that it is aware of the issues and that a solution is on the way. However, if you can’t wait for the patch to roll out globally, there is a workaround that should help you use Google Docs that are common in the meantime.

Twitter has been inundated with complaints from Google Drive and Google Docs users related to Google’s current service issues. With millions of people still staying at home to work and study – relying on online tools, such as Google Drive and Google Docs, to collaborate with colleagues, the timing is particularly bad.

One disappointed Google user tweeted, “Come on, Google Docs. I’ve got work to do, bro,” while another posted, “Google Drive won’t let me open new documents, I’m scared.”

One added: “@GoogleForEdu Are there any issues with Google Classroom today? I can’t post assignments with attached Google docs or slides (and I own those docs). Please advise.”

The main problem the Google Docs user seems to have is creating a new document, which displays an error screen that says, “Google Docs encountered an error. Please try to reload this page or come back in a few minutes . “

When the reported issues with Google Docs first hit, the official Google Workspace Status Dashboard originally said all systems were working normally. However, this has now been updated to say that a range of Google services – Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Sheets, and Google Slides – have been hit by service outages.

Speaking of the problem with Google Drive, Google has shared an update on its Status website that reads, “We are investigating reports of a problem with Google Drive.
