Sky Sports and BT Sport are the place to watch a wealth of live sports content in the UK. Premier League matches are broadcast live on both Sky Sports and BT Sport, but that’s just a scratch on the surface of the offering. If you’re into F1, golf or cricket then a Sky Sports subscription is pretty much essential, while BT Sport has coverage for the UFC, MotoGP, Champions League and Europa League, among others.

However, access to all this great sports content comes at a price, something that internet pirates have long benefited from.

And for rightsholders, the scourge of illegal live streams is a constant thorn in the side.

Fortunately, the European Commission – the legislative arm of the EU – has proposed and adopted a whole series of measures to combat piracy in recent years.

The Digital Services Act, unveiled in December, is one of many ways the EC has sought to combat online piracy – with legislation “significantly” improving the mechanisms for removing illegal content “in violation of copyright law .

And this week, MEPs continued to have stronger powers to tackle piracy.

As reported by the EU Reporter website, a report was approved on Tuesday, April 13 calling for the immediate removal of illegal live streams.

MEPs are calling for concrete measures to ensure that online services disable an illegal live stream when they are notified.

The removal of the unauthorized live stream must be done within minutes, no later than 30 minutes after the start of the event.

These takedown notices can be sent as streaming services, but can also be sent to hosting providers.

Adrián Vázquez Lázara, the chair of the Legal Affairs Committee, said the specific goal is to “tackle those thousands and thousands of illegal broadcasters.” [who] receive the signal from various sporting events all over Europe and broadcast it illegally. “

But Patrick Breyer, MEP for the Pirate Party, told TorrentFreak that the proposals could also have an impact on legal content.

Breyer said, “A 30-minute takedown requirement would be shorter than foreseen for terrorist content, and after hours it would be far too short, especially for small and non-commercial providers.

“If private interest groups are allowed to have the content removed with self-interest without a court review, it would also be expected to lead to an excessive blocking of legal content.”

The next step for these proposed measures is a vote at the May plenary.
