Justice Society World War II: Critical Role star Matt Mercer on creating a grounded hero

DC Comics continues to expand their expansive animated universe by focusing on some of their lesser-known characters. Batman: Soul of the Dragon was released in recent months, featuring the often-forgotten Batman villains. This month’s release, Justice Society: World War II, tells the alternate history of WWII in the DC Universe, where the original version of the Justice League – The Justice Society – fought the Nazis. In an exclusive interview with Express.co.ukCritical Role star Matt Mercer revealed what was ticking him off as Hourman.

Hourman is one of the less remarkable as a superhero.

Real name Rex Tylor, Hourman is a regular, everyday biochemist who created a “miraculous vitamin” (or “Miraclo”). However, when he takes this drug, it gives him super strength, super speed, and super stamina, which rivals his super-powered competitors – but for just one hour.

It was this crux to the character that so interested Mercer in the role of the movie.

He explained, “For me, because he’s surrounded by so many iconic superhero characters who have their own specifics [voice] – especially since he is a hero who has created his own powers – in essence he has not spent his life in the higher echelons of Greek gods, if you will. “

Mercer continued, “So, [I was] trying to ground him as this very human person, someone who is very heroic but also just a guy trying to do what he can with the help of the fruits of his knowledge.

And, occasionally, by letting that power and anger come over and helping him be a helpful part of that team. I wanted to bring that serious gruffness [his voice] sometimes.”

Mercer added, “But in my mind – I don’t know if it’s coming through strongly – he’s definitely trying to make sure he can contribute, and that touch of extra drive gives him continued thrust.”

The Critical Role dungeon master also shared the thrill of exploring an era of heroes in DC Comics who don’t have time to shine on a regular basis.

He laughed, “This is a golden age facet of the DC Universe that hasn’t really been explored in the media – except in the comics.

“And yet, Hourman – this early version of Hourman – was cool to go back and dive into his history and … he’s a character that got more and more complicated, even after his popularity, in dealing with addiction.”

Historically, different versions of Hourman used Miraclo not only to fight crime, but also because he depended on it.

Mercer revealed that while Hourman’s memorable addiction story doesn’t appear in the movie, he tried to use it whenever possible.

He said, “It was cool to weave some subtle facts of that into elements of the performance, just enough so that it doesn’t penetrate and isn’t an important part of the story.

“Many of these characters from the Golden Age were not given the space to apply many nuances. This kind of returned to that area and Hourman to me is definitely one of those … on the shoulders of giants in the midst of these circumstances. “

The actor added, “It was kind of fun … to really discover where that character comes from and his place among these very iconic heroes, so that he stands out as well as standing his ground in that space, narrative and as an artist.”

The DC Comics animated films expand every year and Hourman plays a big part in Justice Society: WWII.

Would Mercer be open to returning as the hero in the future, with smaller characters getting bigger parts in the series ?: “I would absolutely love to do that.

“If there are opportunities to tell more Hourman stories in the future, I would love to be in that space.”
