If you’ve ever wanted the ever-great Lakeith Stanfield to play a samurai, the right project is finally here for you, as Netflix just released the first trailer for Yasuke, and it looks like a damn good time.
The animated series follows the story of Yasuke, a real black samurai in feudal Japan. Stanfield will voice the legendary historical figure in what should be an epic story. The series was created by LeSean Thomas, who also serves as an executive producer and director of the series from the Japanese animation studio MAPPA. Takeshi Koike handled all of the standout character designs and Stanfield serves as the executive producer.
The voice cast also features Ming-Na Wen, Darren Criss, Takehiro Hira, Maya Tanida, Paul Nakauchi, Julie Marcus, William Christopher Stephens, Dia Frampton, Don Donahue, Amy Hill, and Noshi Dalal.
In a war-torn feudal Japan full of mechs and magic, the greatest ronin never known, Yasuke, struggles to maintain a peaceful existence after a past life of violence. But when a local village becomes the center of social unrest between warring Daimyo, Yasuke must pick up his sword and transport a mysterious child who is the target of dark forces and bloodthirsty warlords.
Yasuke premieres on Netflix on April 29.
