Every actor who has played James Bond has added something new to the official Eon movie franchise – be it the action hero or the charmer. Those who auditioned for the official canon movies make their suggestions as to what their version of 007 might be. For some, their work in the audition room may not have landed them the part, but it proved they could be the perfect villain to take on 007.
According to James Bond expert and associate professor at the University of Roehampton, Dr. Ian Kinane, many of those who tried to be Bond have “ built their careers ” on mean characters, with Sean Bean, Julian Glove and Terence Stamp examples of this.
He said, “What I find most interesting is that many of the actors who are considered to be playing Bond have since built their careers playing bad guys …
The fact that so many potential candidates for the Bond cloak end up playing bad guys suggests, tellingly, some of the qualities sought in actors vying for the Bond role: ruthlessness, insensitivity, disdain – some of the characteristics that Fleming’s Bond characteristics and (to a greater or lesser extent) the actors who played him on screen. “
An example of this is Sean Bean, who played Alec Trevelyan, a former 006 agent who went against the MI6.

How Some Future Bonds Have Made Better Villains
Julian Glover in For Your Eyes Only
In the 1995 film GoldenEye, Dr. Kinane points out that Alec is “ just one of the actors in a long line coming to a gruesome end, ” with names like Lord of the Rings’ Boromir and Ned Stark from Game of Thrones.
All of these characters, while there was something good in them, had danger and villains in them, with Alec experiencing gruesome atrocities and the murder / suicide of his parents, for which he blamed British intelligence.
Sean auditioned for the role of James Bond twice at different times, but was passed over and became a lead antagonist instead.
Another actor known for his mean roles is Julian Glover, who played Kristatos in 1981’s For Your Eyes Only.
Ralph Fiennes as M
Daniel Craig is the current incumbent Bond
According to Dr. Kinane must be Julian “ the only living actor to play an antagonist in the Bond, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter franchises, ” after making a real name for himself in these roles.
In The Empire Strikes Back, he played General Veers, who led the Empire’s attack on Hoth, while he played businessman Walter Donovan in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, who worked for the Nazis to win the Holy Grail.
He said of the role, “What would you do if you had the chance to have eternal life? That’s quite a question.
‘Where would you draw the line? People say [Donovan] was a Nazi, he was not a Nazi, he joined the Nazi Party to investigate its property, and he almost fucking understood that.
Just because he was greedy, he did [fall]. This is advice for you [the viewer]: always choose the tin cup. It applies to everything. An allegory for life. “
One last actor approached for Bond but didn’t get the part is Ralph Fiennes, although he didn’t become an enemy of the character, but instead his boss as M in Specter.
Ralph took over from Dame Judi Dench after the events of Skyfall, but had conversations about becoming Bond years before when the role eventually went to Pierce Brosnan.
He said, “Years ago I spoke briefly to Barbara Broccoli and indeed her father Cubby, but it didn’t work out.
“I think Pierce Brosnan, who was a great Bond, played it and that was great, and I think on reflection I’m happy to play M.”
