Sales figures for physical video games in the UK are not yet known. Christopher Dring, Games industry journalist, has tweeted that New Pokémon Snap “comfortably beat” Returnal in the UK Boxed Charts last weekend. In addition, New Pokémon Snap sales are four times that of the original game in September 2000.
The original Pokémon Snap reached No. 9 during its UK release. The Switch is a much better-selling console, though, so it’s easy to see why the recent game performed phenomenally.
In comparison, sales of new Pokémon Snap in opening week are 2.5 times higher than in the previous Pokémon spin-off game, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX. This game was a remake of the 2005 Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team games for Nintendo DS.
The main competition of new Pokémon Snap was Returnal, the first major title to be released only on PS5. Returnal’s performance was probably down to a smaller user base, as the PlayStation 5 is still fairly new, especially when compared to the Nintendo Switch.
Returnal is also in a niche genre and doesn’t have as much appeal as New Pokemon Snap, so comparing the two isn’t exactly fair.
New Pokémon Snap contains more than 200 Pokémon. While it pales in percentage compared to the first game (the original had more than 60 of the 151 Pokémon, while there are now nearly 900 Pokémon), the game is still proving to be a success on sale.
Pokémon fans but not interested in the photography game still have the Diamond and Pearl remakes and spin-off title Pokémon Legends: Arceus to look forward to later this year and early next year.
Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl return to the traditional style of Pokémon games, while Pokémon Legends: Arceus hopes to take the franchise in a new direction.
