This month marks the two years since Huawei was blacklisted from US entities. The earth-shattering blow meant Huawei devices couldn’t install the Google Play Store app right out of the box and affected the compatibility of hugely popular US-made apps like Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook and many more. The bad news didn’t stop there for Huawei, with more sanctions being imposed a year later, meaning companies wishing to supply parts to Huawei using any kind of US technology had to apply for a special license.

Despite all this significant push, Huawei is starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel, with the imminent release of their own in-house operating system HarmonyOS, reducing their reliance on the US.

Huawei has also had to make infrastructure changes to make itself more self-sufficient, such as establishing its own chip factory.

But as Huawei faces pressure from the US, a new challenge suddenly emerges – from its own home country.

Xiaomi is another Chinese smartphone giant that is making a profit amid the troubles Huawei has faced.

As Android authority reported, a new study from Canalys has revealed the annual changes in the European smartphone market.

And the report is not legible for Huawei.

According to Canalys, the P40 Pro makers were ranked as the fifth largest smartphone vendor in Europe for the first quarter of 2021.

This is behind Oppo and then – surprisingly – Apple, with Xiaomi managing to jump the iPhone makers to second position.

At the top of the stack is Samsung, the world’s largest smartphone maker.

According to Canalys, Samsung has a market share of more than a third (35 percent) in Europe with Xiaomi at 23 percent.

Apple, meanwhile, has a 19 percent market share and Oppo is at four percent, while Huawei is further behind at just three percent.

Of these smartphone providers, Canalys added that Huawei is the only company to see its annual growth in the red at -81 percent.

Oppo has seen the largest annual growth (+153 percent) with Xiaomi the second largest winner (+85 percent).

The statistics show that while Huawei has never been in a more self-sufficient position, it has to face an uphill battle to claim ground and overtake other rival Chinese smartphone makers who have had a revival in fortune.
