If your BT broadband home network is playing, you are not alone. An annoying new outage has affected unfortunate BT customers across the country using BT’s Smart Hub 2 router. The bug is disconnecting two devices connected via the Wi-Fi signal – and the only way to keep everything running smoothly is to disconnect part of your signal. A good example of how this outage affects customers every day is speaker systems with Wi-Fi, such as Sonos. During setup, both the Sonos kit and your smartphone, like an iPhone, must be connected via the same Wi-Fi network.

As you may know, all routers provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) allow devices to connect on two frequencies. There is a 2.4Ghz setting, which is slower but offers a much better range, or 5Ghz, which is much faster, but you need to be closer to the router for it to work. Both signals work together and your devices often jump between the two as you move around the house without you even noticing.

It is these 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz signals that seem to be causing the gremlins in some BT users as the Smart Hub 2 router has a hard time working when two devices are connected on two different frequencies and trying with each other to communicate. So if your iPhone is connected to the 2.4 Ghz signal and tries to stream music to a Sonos speaker running at 5 Ghz, the interference will reign and your devices will be disconnected.

BT has now confirmed the problem with the company tell the BBC that it affects a “very small” number of users. That’s not very specific, and since BT currently has more than 6 million users, a “very small” percentage of that total number can still cause thousands of frustrated customers to lose the signal on a regular basis.

What is clear is how frustrating it is for customers with complaints appearing on BT’s community forum page. One user expressed anger at the issues, saying, “I can only connect the Sonos app from my iPhone, MacBook and iPad when connected to the 2.4 Ghz band, which means I have to turn off 5 Ghz.”

While another said, “I’ve had the same problems and pulled my hair out.”

A workaround seems to be to turn off one of the two frequencies meaning all devices are then connected to the same signal, although this can eventually slow down the entire network as all your internet traffic goes through one connection instead of two . .

BT says all users should have an update to their router by the end of May and anyone who thinks they have been affected should contact the company.

A spokesperson told the BBC: “We are aware that a very small number of customers are having an issue connecting their Smart Hub 2 to multiple streaming devices on their Wi-Fi network. Any customer experiencing this issue can be contacted. us and we remotely update their device. We apologize for the inconvenience, “
