Meet the latest Dyson vacuum rival … designed by a team of ex-Dyson engineers

When it comes to cordless vacuum cleaners, Dyson is easily the market leader. In recent weeks, the company, founded by entrepreneur James Dyson, has announced a new vacuum cleaner equipped with a laser to mark dust and grimness that are invisible to the human eye. However, a few ex-Dyson engineers are hoping to disrupt the British brand with their own take on the cordless cleaner.

Lupe Technology, headquartered in Chipping Sodbury in South Gloucestershire, was founded in 2015 by a former research manager and engineer from the Dyson base in Malmesbury, Wiltshire. The first vacuum cleaner to be launched from the new start-up is called the Lupe Pure Cordless.

Most manufacturers, including Dyson, design their cordless cleaners around a handheld unit. This can be used to vacuum carpets and hard floors, while still being light enough to clean hard-to-reach areas such as stairs, car seats and behind the back of sofa cushions. The only problem with this design is that all the gubbins – battery pack, motor, trash can – should be in your hand. This can make these designs a bit heavy, or, in models with lighter batteries, reduce the amount of cleaning you can do between charges.

To solve this problem, the Lupe Pure Cordless opts for an upright design. As a result, the Pure Cordless remotely resembles its corded predecessors more than competing cordless handheld gadgets.

But while it may not look that futuristic, this design has some real benefits. First of all, you don’t need to drill a hole for a specially designed holster to support and charge your cordless vacuum cleaner. As it can stand freely, it can be stored in any cupboard or corner.

Second, since you don’t always have to carry the weight of all the major components in your hand, the ex-Dyson engineers have managed to find space for a one-liter trash can – so you don’t have to keep running back to trash can to throw out your grim mid-clean. In comparison, the £ 599 Dyson V11 Absolute has a 0.7 liter dust container.

Of course, the upright design of the Pure Cordless also allows for a larger battery, which Lupe says will keep vacuuming for 60 minutes between charges. Thankfully, Lupe hasn’t skimped on suction to achieve that impressive battery life either. According to the company, its new vacuum can deliver “up to 10x” more useful suction power compared to competing designs.

The Pure Cordless uses a HEPA filter, which, according to Lupe, captures 99.99 percent of the fine dust and allergens in your home while you clean. Luckily, you don’t have to replace that filter either, as it can be washed with cold water and pushed back into the vacuum between cleanings.

Lupe offers a two-year warranty on its Pure Cordless cleaner, which retails for £ 699 but currently retails for around £ 569.

Co-founder Pablo Montero said of the company, “A lot of people ask me if I think our competitors like Dyson are formidable. The easiest refutation to that is that at some point they were all like us. and they were ultimately successful. I certainly think with something like a vacuum cleaner, because everyone has one, there is room for everyone. Although as competitors we are Dyson and Shark, we really don’t have to bother them at all for our business to be successful in terms of their business. While it’s one of those things you can hang on about what could be happening, the reality is it’s all fair and medical. I wouldn’t be doing this if I weren’t risk averse, you’re just taking it in your stride. “
