Army of the Dead: Zack Snyder took ‘inspiration’ from Justice League for the Netflix movie

Recent articles

Director Zack Snyder has become synonymous with films set in the DC Comics universe in recent years. Not only did he bring the greatest Superman rendition to the big screen in Man of Steel with Henry Cavill, he also continued the story in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Although he has many fans who know him as just a superhero director, he started his journey with a zombie movie.

Snyder first hit Hollywood with the 2004 remake of George A Romero’s Dawn of the Dead.

In the film, Snyder brought the horror movie into the 21st century with more realistic effects and gruesome stories about zombie children and an undead baby.

The director recently spoke with Express.co.uk about his return to the roots of his zombie movie with Netflix for Army of the Dead and adapting his now-established film style to a new genre.

While discussing whether his previous DCEU films helped Army of the Dead, Snyder said, “I mean, look … yeah, in some ways.”

Snyder continued, “I don’t know if this movie has cinematic style or similarities so strong with movies like the superhero movies I’ve been making over the years, but I’ll say the idea of deconstructing the genre is something. was very interested in it.

“And [Army of the Dead] is inspired by films I have made over the years. “

The director has worked hard in recent years to break the mold in the films he has worked on.

Snyder’s superhero films are a good example of this, as they focus more on visuals and pathos than pure action.

Army of the Dead is no different. It stars Dave Bautista – of Marvel’s Avengers Endgame – as Scott Ward, the leader of a group of mercenaries who want to not only fight the undead but also break into a Las Vegas vault.

Although the director had a clear vision for the Netflix movie, he did encounter some challenges along the way.

He explained, “Shoot [Army of the Dead] was a bit of its own … often a movie presents its own challenges in production while doing it. “

Snyder continued, “You know, whether it’s the schedule, or the makeup, or whatever you’re fighting for, and it’s kind of inspiring a style change.

“I was pretty straight forward with the way I wanted to photograph it.

“It was really a matter of trying to create this kind of intimate [feel].

“Even when the characters were outside, I wanted there to be intimacy with the way they were photographed.”

Although the film is set in Las Vegas, it retains a claustrophobic feel throughout.

This energy and design is inspired by some classic genre movies, Snyder added.

In particular, he pointed to such films as Escape from New York, Aliens and Planet of the Apes.

Army of the Dead is scheduled for release on Netflix on May 21, 2021.
