James Bond’s No Time to Die: Britons eagerly await cinema releases

A survey of 2000 of adults found that one in four planned to return to the cinema before the end of May, and three in 10 were more enthusiastic about watching highly anticipated movies on the big screen than they would have been when they were originally released. Daniel Craig’s latest appearance as ‘James Bond’ topped the list as the most anticipated blockbuster movie of 2021. Britons are also counting down the days for their release, including ‘Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home’, Margot Robbie playing her part when Harley picks up again. Quinn in ‘The Suicide Squad’ and John Krasinski’s sequel thriller, ‘A Quiet Place: Part 2’.

Other highly anticipated films in the top 40 list included nostalgic remakes and sequels, including Cruella, Space Jam 2 and Peter Rabbit 2.

It also found that more than a tenth of adults said closing movie theaters was one of the most difficult parts of the lockdown for them.

This left them with no choice but to watch movies on their TV (85 percent), laptop (16 percent), tablets (14 percent) and even their phone (10 percent).

When the big screens reopen on May 17, 16 percent plan to travel within a week of opening the doors, while the average adult hopes to go nearly twice a month.

The survey, commissioned by Comparethemarket.com to celebrate the reopening of cinemas and the return of 2 for 1 Meerkat Movies tickets, found that a third of adults watched a movie at least once a week during lockdown.

Reasons for this included reviving a familiar sense of a trip to the cinema, to evoke a sense of feel-good nostalgia, and to create a moment of pure escapism.

British film critic James King said: “There is so much to look forward to with the reopening of cinemas – not just the movies (including plenty of blockbusters) but the entire experience.

“Meeting friends, family or your other half to enjoy a bucket of fresh popcorn, comfortable seating, a movie on the big screen with surround sound, complete with the company of an audience, is a matter of course for us.

“There’s something nostalgic about a trip to the cinema, be it the movie itself, the food or the memories, people clearly can’t wait to get back to their local cinemas.”

The survey also found that 56 percent of those surveyed agreed that watching a movie at home doesn’t give the same adrenaline rush as the cinema experience.

Other things Britons have missed about going to the cinema over the past year include the big screen (44 percent), surround sound (31 percent), and watching trailers (20 percent).

Likewise, the smell of popcorn (18 percent), collective audience reactions (15 percent), and the nostalgic feeling (23 percent) were all missed.

Movie buffs tried to recreate the feel of a movie theater at home by adjusting their surroundings, dimming the lights (20 percent), making their own popcorn (15 percent), turning up the volume (13 percent), and using homemade nachos. make (11 percent).

Another 65 percent of those surveyed through OnePoll think it is important to support local movie theaters after the lockdown, with people typically feeling excited (33 percent), nostalgic (19 percent), and even emotional (15 percent) about returning to their local cinema.

The survey also found that movies seen on TV during lockdown that we want to watch on a big screen include Bad Boys for Life (32 percent), Mulan (31 percent) and The Witches (27 percent).
