Millions of Sky, BT, Vodafone, Zen and TalkTalk users will soon be treated to much more impressive downloads and it can’t come soon enough. The UK is still lagging far behind many parts of the world when it comes to internet speeds, but that seems to be changing. Actually owned by BT, Openreach just announced that it is accelerating the rollout of Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and hopes that four million homes a year will now be treated to this high-speed technology.

If you didn’t know, FTTP is vital as it delivers a full fiber optic signal straight to your front door, meaning speeds always remain blazing fast. While fiber optics is already installed under the pavement in most streets, the line that then connects this broadband to homes is often older copper technology that simply cannot meet modern needs.

Copper lines only offer speeds of around 70 Mbps, but if you run the fiber directly through your walls, it can be ramped up to over 900 Mbps – at that speed, it would take less than 40 seconds to shoot a Full HD movie. to download.

Now you may be wondering why BT’s Openreach is helping companies like Sky, Vodafone and TalkTalk improve their speed. A number of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use the Openreach network to supply their customers, so this upgrade should mean that a whole host of ISPs can provide an improved service.

Openreach says it will start ramping up four million buildings per year effective immediately, so customers should see faster downloads soon.

“BT is already building more fiber optic broadband to homes and businesses than anyone else in the UK. Today, we are increasing our FTTP target from 20 million to 25 million homes and businesses to deliver more value to our shareholders and to support the government’s full fiber ambitions, “said Philip Jansen, Chief Executive, BT Group .

“This has three huge benefits: it allows us to go faster and increase our capacity to deploy fiber for households and businesses; it allows us to go further and bring fiber to more people, including in rural communities, and; it will boost the UK’s economic recovery, with better connectivity and up to 7,000 new jobs. “

Openreach now says it hopes to have 25 million homes connected to FTTP speeds by 2025 – that’s five million more than initially hoped.
