In what has become a common theme for Windows 10 users, this week saw a new Patch Tuesday release being pushed by Microsoft, but things didn’t go smoothly. As with other Patch Tuesday releases, the latest Windows 10 update has had some unintended knock-on effects, with users reporting a compatibility issue with Microsoft’s Edge browser, meaning the update won’t install or automatically roll back. As reported by Windows Latestthe issue is with Windows 10 KB5003173 – which is part of the May 2021 release of Patch Tuesday.

PC users who have tried to install the update have received a 0x800f0922 error code, causing Windows to initiate an automatic rollback.

It seems that the bug is happening on machines where the Chromium version of Edge has been manually removed in favor of the Legacy browser.

When a Windows 10 user tries to install KB5003173, the patch tries to install the Chromium version of Edge, but if it finds an empty Edge folder – because the browser is not being removed properly – it can cause problems.

Fortunately, there are some solutions that Windows 10 users can try.

Affected users can manually reinstall Edge from the official Microsoft website and then try to install the cumulative update again.

Or alternatively, users can delete the Edge folder found in C: Program Files (x86) Microsoft.

However, there are reports that the latest Windows 10 cumulative update fails to install with various error messages – and if it does, the Edge solution won’t fix the problem.

Some Windows 10 users have also reported that the latest patch looks like it’s about to be installed, but fails at 73 percent and an error pops up.

If so, you can try to repair your machine with the Media Creation Tool.

You can also pause the update and wait for the next cumulative update to appear in a few weeks.

The release of May Patch Tuesday this year isn’t the first time a monthly Windows 10 update has given PC fans a headache.

After other Patch Tuesday releases this year, Windows 10 users have reported a slew of issues such as printer compatibility issues, Blue Screen of Death errors, and game performance of devices equipped with Nvidia GPUs dropping sharply.
