The Blitz was one of the darkest moments of World War II, when the Nazi bombings resulted in the loss of thousands of lives. Brave soldiers took to the skies to fight, while others had to try to survive on the ground in London for 56 nights.

The Blitz 80th Anniversary is a new documentary that looks back in 1940 and 1941 when the brutal bombings of London killed more than 40,000 civilians.

In an exclusive clip shared to Express.co.uk, veteran and Squadron Leader Geoffrey Wellum shared how he prayed when he knew the bombs were coming, begging to get another day.

He said in a heartbreaking interview, “I remember looking up at the sky and thinking, ‘It’s going to be another wonderful day. Oh god, another dawn. ‘

I said a little prayer. [I prayed] ‘It’s going to be a very busy day, but if I forget, don’t forget me.

“Just give me this day, please give me this day.” ”

He also said that because of his work in the Air Force, he did not have time to worry about his own well-being until he prayed.

He added, “In the end you didn’t think about it, you were tired.

“I could always see the dawn … I can see the spitfire in the diffuser, I can hear the pilots and the ring of gasoline …”

The Blitz happened after Adolf Hitler’s air strategy changed during World War II, and German forces concentrated on industrial cities with more people in them.

The period of the greatest bombing was in September 1940, but the Blitz spirit meant civilians worked together to protect themselves.

People took cover in temporary shelters, such as those in subway stations and purpose-built air raid shelters.

The second phase of The Blitz began in November 1940 and lasted until February 1941, with port towns such as Swansea and Portsmouth as inland towns.

The final phase focused more on ports before most of the attacks attributed to The Blitz ended in May 1941.

The Luftwaffe dropped about 41,000 tons of bombs during The Blitz, causing problems with production, transportation, and food supply, and when ports took center stage, it affected gun production.
