While Spotify has just hit its users with a price hike, Apple Music has launched a major upgrade and it’s not costing a cent more. The US tech company just revealed that subscribers to the £ 9.99 per month streaming service will be treated to vastly improved audio from next month when they listen to their favorite playlists.

This sound boost is due to the fact that Apple Music is getting something called Spatial Audio with support for Dolby Atmos.

For those who may not have heard of this technology, Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos allow artists to create immersive audio experiences for their fans with truly multi-dimensional sound and clarity. This actually makes the sound seem to hit your ears from all directions, making things sound much more lifelike and engaging.

Once the upgrade is released, users don’t need to do anything, as Apple Music will automatically play Dolby Atmos tracks by default, as long as you have the right equipment.

To get the best experience, you need the latest AirPods and Beats headphones with an H1 or W1 chip – that means gadgets like Beats Solo3, Powerbeats3, AirPods and BeatsX will all work.

The enhanced sound also comes from the built-in speakers in the latest versions of iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Apple says it will continuously add new Dolby Atmos songs and curate a special set of Dolby Atmos playlists to help listeners find the music they love.

In addition, albums available in Dolby Atmos have a badge on the detail page for easy discovery.

“Apple Music is making the greatest progress ever in sound quality,” said Oliver Schusser, Apple’s vice president of Apple Music and Beats.

“Listening to a song in Dolby Atmos is like magic. The music comes from all around you and sounds incredible. Now we bring this truly innovative and immersive experience to our listeners with music from their favorite artists such as J Balvin, Gustavo Dudamel, Ariana Grande, Maroon 5, Kacey Musgraves, The Weeknd and many more. Subscribers can also listen to their music in the highest audio quality with Lossless Audio. Apple Music as we know it is about to change forever. “

And Kevin Yeaman, president and CEO of Dolby Laboratories, added, “Today marks the introduction of Dolby Atmos to Apple Music – a new music experience that changes the way music is created by artists and enjoyed by their fans.

“We’re partnering with Apple Music to make Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos widely available to all musicians and anyone who loves music.”

In addition to this Dolby upgrade, Apple Music also makes its catalog of more than 75 million songs available in Lossless Audio. Apple uses ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) to keep every bit of the original audio file. This means that Apple Music subscribers can hear exactly the same thing that the artists created in the studio.

To start listening to Lossless Audio, subscribers using the latest version of Apple Music can turn it on in Settings> Music> Audio Quality. Here they can choose different resolutions for different connections such as mobile, wifi or download. Apple Music’s Lossless layer starts at CD quality, which is 16 bit at 44.1 kHz (kilohertz), and goes up to 24 bit at 48 kHz, and can be played natively on Apple devices.
