Today England is moving towards the next step of the government’s lockdown roadmap. Pubs, cafes and restaurants in England have reopened indoors, while flights to a small number of countries abroad have resumed. And if you want to travel abroad and have already received both doses of the coronavirus vaccine, make sure you have downloaded the NHS app on your iOS or Android smartphone.

Starting today, the NHS smartphone app can also show whether you have been fully vaccinated against the corona virus. And this is crucial for travelers as some countries have made it one of their conditions for entry.

Other entry requirements, such as proof of a negative COVID-19 test on arrival, may also be required, so be sure to research carefully what the country you hope to visit should see from you.

If you have already received both cases of the coronavirus vaccine by then download the official NHS app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

The app you need is not NHS Covid’s track and trace app, but the one used for booking doctor’s appointments and ordering repeat prescriptions.

Starting today (Monday, May 17), the NHS app should have a new option available that says ‘check your Covid-19 vaccine record’.

This should be the top option in the ‘Your Health’ tab of the app.

Regarding the use of the NHS app as a vaccine certificate, the government website said: “You can access your COVID-19 vaccination status through the free NHS app. You can access the app through mobile devices such as a smartphone or tablet. Proof of your COVID Vaccination status of -19 is displayed in the NHS app. We recommend that you register with the app before booking international travel. Access via the NHS app does not require contacting your primary care physician.

“The NHS app will be further developed with further updates in the future. This includes the ability to display your COVID-19 test results.”

Despite the update to the NHS app, the BBC’s technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones said it was not yet clear whether border agencies will accept the app as proof of vaccination status.

The BBC reporter said: “Some app users used to have access to vaccine records, but an update makes them easier to find and available to everyone.

“What is not included is a record of test results, and it is not yet clear whether overseas border agencies will accept the app as proof of vaccination status.”

An official NHS website also said people can request a letter saying they have been fully vaccinated by calling 119.
