Developers Mojang has confirmed that it is now ready to launch the first part of the ambitious Minecraft 1.17 update this week.

And now that the release date has been secured, gamers can count down to when Caves & Cliffs Part 1 will be available to download.

The update is available for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android and Windows 10 – as well as Java Edition on Windows, macOS and Linux.

Mojang chose to split the Caves update into two parts due to the magnitude of what they were up to.

As Mojang confirmed, the first part of the Caves and Cliffs update will include new mobs, new items such as the amethyst shar, and new blocks.

This includes the copper ore block, the first added since Nether Quartz ore in the Redstone update in 2013.

Copper comes in two varieties: a common one found in stone and a rarer version found in deep shale, close to the bottom of the world.

Mojang has confirmed that it can be found through mining, with copper ore veins found at medium depths and not too close to the surface.

Copper will not fall when mined and comes in chunks of raw copper, each of which can be melted into a copper bar.

WHEN WILL THE MINECRAFT 1.17 UPDATE BE OUT?

Developers Mojang has confirmed that the Minecraft 1.17 update has a release date for Tuesday, June 8.

They haven’t disclosed what time everything will go live, but the new Minecraft Cave & Cliffs release time is expected to be around 3pm BST.

This is when recent snapshot patches have been launched and it seems like a good pattern for Mojang to keep using.

A post from Mojang reveals more about what’s to come this week: “The good news is that the update also includes the beautiful and totally harmless-unless you-a-drowned axolotls!

“Unfortunately, they are limited to water or a bucket, so they can’t join my crusade against goats.

“But that’s not all – the once Minecraft Earth-exclusive mob, the glow squid, will grace our oceans too!

“While I was Team Mooshroom (another petition to get around to), I’m just glad this one won’t reward my kindness with a brutal push. Plus, it’s so beautiful that it might motivate me to build that huge aquarium I’ve always wanted.

“And what would a Minecraft update be without blocks? There are plenty this round. Some will just appear in the world, others may be a little trickier to discover.”

Adding: “In the real world, there are many different types of copper ore – from cuprite, which contains 88% copper, to chalcopyrite, which is only 35% copper. Humans have been mining copper for nearly ten thousand years, and the earliest evidence of excavations has been found at sites in present-day Turkey and Iraq.

“Unlike other ores, such as iron, the block itself will not fall when you mine it (unless you use a silk pick). Instead, you get a few chunks of raw copper, each of which can be melted into a copper bar.

“That’s great, because you get a bit more copper per ore block than with iron. Don’t say we don’t do anything nice for you. You can also make raw copper blocks from the raw copper.”
