Natalie Portman’s role in Star Wars is considered iconic, although many try to forget that the prequel series even exists. Her Queen Amidala makeup was legendary and her role as the mother of Luke and Leia Skywalker was one of great importance.
How old was Natalie Portman in Star Wars?
When Natalie Portman made Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, she was only 16 years old.
The film was one of her first big-budget films, and the film was released in 1999, her senior year in high school.
Natalie was unable to attend the film’s premiere as she was studying for high school graduation, which served her well for attending Harvard University, although she was working on the remaining two Star Wars prequel films during that time.

Natalie Portman as Queen Amidala
Speaking of her time in the role for CNN in 1999, Natalie said: “George [Lucas] has worked with me a lot in changing my voice and my movement and the way I carried myself.
“We worked on this accent that … kind of goes to old, older generations of actresses who used some sort of unidentifiable accent. ‘Is it American or is it British?’
“I watched Lauren Bacall, Audrey Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn. When you look at them, their voices and stature are so regal, even in their mundane characters.
“And that’s kind of why I used it to model after.
“I was very honored and excited to get such an amazing opportunity, but I really wasn’t aware of how important Star Wars was…and when I saw the movies I really liked them, but I did it.” still don’t really understand how many… were passionate fans of this movie.”

While for many this is the movie that brought Natalie’s name out, it certainly wasn’t her first movie, or even her first appearance.
Natalie became a child model at age 10, after being spotted by an agent, but turned down the offer and used it as a stepping stone to get an acting agent.
She, along with Britney Spears, was cast as an understudy for the off-Broadway musical Ruthless! from 1992, starring Laura Bell Bundy.
Although this was an important step, her first film role came in the 1994 film Léon: The Professional, from director Luc Besson.

She played an orphan who befriends a hit man, and at the beginning the script featured murders and nudity committed by her character, Mathilda.
Her parents were concerned about these moments, so Luc removed them from the script and Natalie took the part.
Some criticized Luc’s characterization of Mathilda for sexualizing the young girl, and years later, in 2007, Natalie spoke out about this herself.
She said: “There is a surprising preponderance of those kinds of roles for young girls.
“A kind of fantasy objects for men, and especially this idealized purity combined with the fertility of youth, all in one…
“It was definitely interesting to think about — why men write the female characters they do.
“Just like the way they write the male character. How much is wish-fulfillment fantasy, and why.”
After this role, she starred in the short film Developing in 1994, then began working in more acclaimed films, such as Michael Mann’s Heat, starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.
In 1996, she had roles in Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks!, comedy-drama Everyone Says I Love You, and rom-com Beautiful Girls, before taking part in Star Wars.
