Dune: ‘It’s a masterpiece’ – Jason Momoa gives first details about Denis Villeneuve epic

Later this year, Frank Herbert’s epic hero journey Dune will hit theaters for the first time in more than 30 years. An earlier adaptation of the story was released in 1984, directed by David Lynch, but was hailed as one of the greatest cinematic disasters of all time due to its scripts and box office revenue. Since then, directors have been reluctant to fall back into the world of Arrakis to fight over the spice, Melange. Director Denis once again takes Frank’s vision to the big screen with Jason as Duncan Idaho by his side. The DC Comics actor has now spoken out about the film now that it is finished.

Jason appeared on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon this week to discuss the second season of his Apple TV Plus show See.

During the conversation, he was asked about Dune, to which he immediately replied, “It’s a masterpiece.

“I’ve never been to anything of that magnitude” [before]. Dennis is a genius.”

The Game of Thrones star also revealed that he has seen the finished version of the film.

Jason told Jimmy, “I have to see it. It was really cool because my kids were here, so we had to take them there.

“The first time I saw something like this with my kids, it’s a very grown-up movie, but so beautiful.”

The Aquaman star’s character, Duncan Idaho, is a warrior and the right-hand man of Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac).

Jason has previously said of the film, “I’ve never worked with action on this scale. Denis is a film genius and overall all the action I’ve done has been nowhere near Denis.”

Denis has previously directed such wonderful films as Blade Runner 2049, Prisoners, Arrival, Sicario, and Enemy, so it’s no surprise that Jason has praised Dune so highly.

The prolific director has previously spoken out about how he became “obsessed” with the novel in his teens.

At a press conference, Denis called Dune a “very powerful human story,” adding that he always believed it had “huge potential on screen.”

He continued, “At its core, you can see it from one angle as a powerful, epic adventure story, but it has so many themes that make the book so rich.”

Denis continued: “We have tried to preserve the wealth in the film… people, we have to earn our destiny to change the world. The film is like a call to action for us to change things, especially for the youth. “

Jason also noted, “The cast is huge,” which it is, with the likes of Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Chang Chen, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Oscar Isaac, and Josh Brolin.

Timothée Chalamet plays Dune’s hero Paul Atreides, an actor who has praised Denis countless times since his casting was announced.

In the same press conference, the director said that Timothée is “by far the best actor of his generation”.

Denis also pointed out the main reason he cast Timothée in the role is because of his “unique blend of having such a young look on camera while also still coming across as an old soul”.

He added: “[Timothée] has an insane charisma that can be found in the old Hollywood stars of the 1920s.”

Dune hits theaters on October 1, 2021 and HBO Max.
