A big new update is coming to your iPhone later this year, with Apple announcing the release of its all-new iOS 15 operating system. This major software upgrade was announced last week at the company’s annual WWDC Developers Conference and there’s plenty to look forward to, including major changes to FaceTime, Maps and Safari. iOS 15 will be pushed to all iPhones in the fall — already with iOS 14 — and here are 5 of the biggest upgrades coming to your device soon.

FACETIME

One of the biggest changes in iOS 15 is a massive upgrade to Apple’s FaceTime video calling service. With millions relying on video calling apps to stay in touch with friends and family during the current health crisis, Apple FaceTime has doubled, which is pretty simplistic compared to some of its biggest rivals. With iOS 15, all that changes thanks to a number of improvements aimed at making talking to contacts on a screen much more immersive.

FaceTime will now boast Spatial Audio, which uses a clever technology to make it seem like friends’ voices come from exactly where their face is on your iPhone or iPad screen. This should give the feeling that you are in the room with your friends or family. You must use headphones that support Spatial Audio, such as the AirPods Pro or AirPods Max.

If you’re in the middle of a video chat and the neighbor starts mowing the yard, there’s also “Noise Isolation,” which removes all the distracting audio around you, so all the people on the phone can hear are your soft tones.

Another cool feature that fans are sure to love is the portrait mode. Just like when you use portrait mode to take a selfie, FaceTime now adds a blur behind your face so you stand out more during conversations – it also means friends can’t rummage through every book title on your bookshelf.

Also included in this update is the ability to schedule a call with contacts for a specific time and then be reminded so that they join at the right time.

That all sounds great, but perhaps the biggest new feature is SharePlay. This allows anyone to share their music or video with anyone who is on a call.

Playback is synced across everyone’s devices, so friends can add new songs to a queue or skip a bad choice on everyone’s iPhone or iPad. Disney+, TikTok and a number of other streaming apps have already committed to implementing the feature when iOS 15 launches later this year. You can also share what’s happening on your screen.

FOCUS MODE

If you’re always distracted by your phone, the new Focus Mode will help. This option is introduced to allow users to disable certain alerts or change the appearance of the home screen depending on what they are doing during the day.

That means you can hide addictive games during work hours, but once you’re done with your shift, emails from the boss can be tucked away automatically. Focus mode allows you to set multiple categories for your device: Work, Home, and more, with each setting changing the apps on your home screen.

Your iPhone can also automatically switch modes based on your location. Once in focus mode, contacts are also alerted that you’re busy, which should put an end to any arguments that you haven’t responded to a text.

CARDS

Apple Maps is getting a major reboot with the entire service getting a huge lick of paint.

Go to some of the world’s largest cities and you will now find a very detailed view with roads showing every traffic light and crosswalk. Buildings have also been preciously mapped and iconic landmarks now appear in the most intricate detail.

Another useful feature of Maps is a three-dimensional city driving experience. This bird’s eye view gives a much clearer view of the road ahead and should ensure you never miss a turn or intersection on the highway.

If you’d rather hop on a bus than in your car, Apple is improving public transit directions with maps that now show you when your stop is approaching and when to get off.

LIVE TEXT

This is a clever new feature that iPhone users will love.

Live Text adds the ability to copy and paste text from a photo. For example, menus, restaurant names, passport details and even handwritten notes can be copied and pasted into Messages and Emails as editable text.

The feature also works with Apple’s Translate app, so you can use the feature in your camera or Photos app to decide what to order when traveling abroad.

NEW SAFARIA

Finally, Safari gets an upgrade that moves the search and tab bar to the bottom of the screen to make things easier to use with one hand.

This new tab bar has also been made more compact and lighter so that it interferes less with what you’re viewing in the browser.

There is also a new tab groups option that allows users to save tabs and access them easily at any time on iPhone, iPad or Mac. And there’s now a customizable homepage and plus web extensions finally make it to Safari on iOS.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, said of the update: “The iPhone has become indispensable for many customers, and this year we’ve created even more ways to improve our everyday lives.

“iOS 15 helps users stay connected while sharing experiences in real-time, gives them new tools to reduce distractions and find focus, uses intelligence to improve the photo experience and, with massive upgrades to Maps, offers new ways to world, we can’t wait for customers to experience it.”
