Director Chris McKay planned an epic sequel to the fan favorite fan The LEGO Batman Movie. How epic? So much so that he described it as “Boogie nights-ish.”
In a recent interview with Steve Weintraub from Colliderub, McKay took the time to promote his sci-fi action movie Tomorrow’s War to dive into what he was up to The LEGO Batman Movie 2 – although he started by explaining why we won’t see a sequel to his beloved first film.
“Because LEGO has left Warner Brothers and is now with Universal, there probably won’t be… LEGO Batman continued, unfortunately,” says McKay. “I’m sorry to say it, but I don’t think she’s a… LEGO Batman 2.”
Unfortunately, McKay seemed to have some key ideas for this new film, and he planned to bring a number of all-star writers on board, including Rick & Morty and Communities Dan Harmon and Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ Michael Waldon:
“Dan (Harmon) and (Michael) Waldron had an initial draft of the script which was really great,” says McKay. “It was truly epic… both from an action point of view and from a story point of view. The structure was The Godfather Part II…a story about Batman’s relationship with the Justice League (and Superman) now, as well as the formative moments of the Justice League (and Batman’s relationship with Superman) then.”
