WhatsApp wants to shake up its Archived Chats feature – and it was about time. Facebook’s messaging platform has long had the ability to archive one-on-one conversations and group chats you’re no longer interested in, but don’t want to delete. However, archived chats, which are currently only accessible if you pull down from the top of the main Chats tab, are easily forgotten.

Fortunately, that seems to be changing.

discovered by the team of WABetaInfoBrowsing WhatsApp’s latest betas to reveal details about upcoming changes to the app, WhatsApp seems poised to bring archived chats to its own tab. This will presumably be next to the Status, Calls, Camera, Chats and Settings tabs currently running at the bottom of the smartphone app.

Archived chats contain all the conversations you’re done with… but may return one day. It helps to keep the main Chats tab organized. WhatsApp is now used by a number of brands to help customers message customer service representatives.

If you’ve had a complaint about an online order, discussed it with the company within WhatsApp, and are waiting for a refund, you probably don’t want it to stay at the top of your Chats list. Still, it might not be the smartest move to delete the conversation history before the refund has been deposited into your account.

Archived chats are the perfect place for these types of conversations. Hen Do and other event-specific groups were also able to find a new home there. And unlike at this point, when new messages in one of these chats cause them to jump out of the Archived Chats menu and back to the main Chats tab, they now stay put. Yes, WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp wants to add a setting to archive your archived conversations for good.

All WhatsApp users need to do is go to Settings > Chats and then choose Keep chats archived to make sure these conversations stay on their dedicated tab.

Another tweak to archived chats to make them more useful, the new tab includes an Edit button. Just like the main Chats tab, tapping this allows you to manage multiple conversations at once, including delete or mark as read.

WhatsApp has a slew of new features in store this year, including the new Archived Chats feature that is currently in testing, as well as Disappear Mode – which allows users to set a self-destruct timer on their text messages and cross-platform support allowing users to switch between an iPad, laptop or a business and personal smartphone with their conversation history synced across all devices.
