Knights in the Nightmare is known for its unusual combination of shooter mechanics with a tactical JRPG. In the original Nintendo DS incarnation, players could use the stylus to maneuver a string – the player’s character – across the screen. The will-o’-the-wisp could awaken units around the battlefield, which were then activated to attack enemies. Players also had to move the will-o’-the-wisp to avoid bullet-style attacks.
The game is also part of Sting’s Department of Heaven series. Department of Heaven is the umbrella name for a series of games developed under Sting Product Team A. They include those from 2004 Riviera: the promised land and Yggdra Union: We will never fight alone on the Game Boy Advance and gungnir on the PSP. The existance Department of Heaven games would all receive PSP releases. There are also spin-offs like Blaze Union and Gloria Union.
Knights in the Nightmare Remaster is in development and will launch on Switch and mobile devices in Japan in 2021. Yggdra Union was also announced for Switch in February 2020.
