If you’re about to watch the first film in the Fear Street trilogy, you’re in for a wild ride! Fear Street Part 1: 1994 debuted on Netflix today, and I guarantee there are enough surprises and kills to keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time. The first installment in the series based on R.L. Stine’s books of the same name follows a group of friends in the fictional town of Shadyside, Ohio. Deena (Kiana Madeira) is heartbroken over her girlfriend Sam (Olivia Scott Welch) moving to a different town, while her little brother Josh (Benjamin Flores Jr.) spends his free time chatting on the web about the legend of their town’s witch, Sarah Fier.
The opening scene doesn’t hesitate to jump into the horror as a young woman working at the mall (Maya Hawke) is stalked and killed by a man wearing a skull mask. In a move very reminiscent of Scream, the opening introduces viewers to one of the main villains before we then meet our protagonist of the film.
Deena and Sam’s relationship is a major storyline in Fear Street Part 1: 1994. It seems more one-sided in the beginning but soon we realize Sam is still in love with Deena, too. The pair discuss the difficulties of being openly gay to their parents and their peers, and they get to a good place by the middle of the film. But do they end up together in the end?
What happens to Sam in Fear Street Part 1: 1994?
Another major component of Deena and Sam’s relationship is that Sam is being hunted by Sarah Fier and her henchmen of the undead (casual!), which does throw a wrench into their happily ever after. While it seems towards the end that the two ladies would end up together, one of the final scenes poses an unexpected complication.
When all is seemingly over, Sam appears, looking possessed, and stabs Deena. It’s a shocking move to both Deena and the viewers, as it becomes evident that the witch still has a hold over Sam and is now controlling her.
Deena manages to tie Sam up in the phone cord when Josh comes downstairs to see what’s happened. “Sam’s not feeling herself. We have to get her back,” Deena says.
The final scene we get is Deena and Josh visiting C. Berman, a woman who escaped the witch years ago, who’s explaining to the siblings what happened to her. This, presumably, will serve as the story for Fear Street Part 2: 1978, the next film in the trilogy.
As of right now, we’re not sure if Deena and Sam will ever be truly reunited again, but we sure hope so. Deena is in love with Sam and will do anything to bring her back, so we’re expecting that to happen.
Fear Street Part 1: 1994 is now streaming on Netflix.
