Sony has released another mysterious PS5 patch that lacks any meaningful patch notes.

What we can tell you is that today’s system update is available for download and weighs about 902 MB.

And while it’s not a big piece to install, that doesn’t mean it’s unimportant. All console owners must complete the PS5 update process so that they can continue to access the PSN and PlayStation Store.

And for those interested in what today’s PS5 update does, Sony has only confirmed that it includes system performance improvements.

Sony doesn’t say how that could change your gaming experience, and we don’t expect any further news from the company on the subject.

Gamers have shared their own speculations about what may have been included and, if anything, changed.

One minor item that has been talked about involves fixing dimming issues on QLED Samsung TVs, although this remains speculation for now.

“For anyone who has had issues with the 2014 firmware update on the 2020 QLED Samsung TVs, this fixes a lot! (local dimming).”

While today’s PS5 update is unlikely to have made many major changes, many more are planned for 2021.

Sony recently announced its plans for a PS5 beta program, which will allow those who sign up to test the latest console features.

The message from the tech giant reads: “If you are selected to be part of the program, you will receive an email with instructions on how to download the beta version of the following system software.

“To sign up, you need a PS5 console with an internet connection and a PlayStation Network account. You will also be automatically added to the potential participant pool for future betas of PS5 system software without having to re-register.

“After the beta has started, you can restore your system software to the latest official release version before the beta program ends.

“Our last major PS5 system update in April introduced new features such as expanded USB storage, multi-generation Share Play, an improved Game Base, and other UI improvements and social features.

“We’ll be sharing more in the coming weeks about what to expect in the beta for our next update.

“Whether you’re a new or returning PlayStation beta tester, we thank you for your support. Your feedback helps us improve the console experience for our entire community.”

The PS5 has been available for over six months now and has received several significant patches that have helped improve the overall experience.

However, they still remain very hard to buy and inventory shortages are not expected to improve much in July. There is a chance of a bump on the road to the holiday season, but many predict the shortages will continue through 2022.
