Freeview continues to grow in popularity and it’s not hard to see why. This service offers a whole range of content without paying expensive monthly subscription fees to companies like Sky or Virgin. Despite the allure of free TV viewing, there is an issue with Freeview where some users of the service are affected by annoying glitches that hurt picture and sound quality.

These problems stem from the way Freeview is received by the antennas attached to millions of homes in the UK.

The frequencies used by some mobile services are close to those previously used for free to watch TV. This minimizes the chance that antennas, TVs or set-top boxes will struggle to receive a good signal when new cell towers are activated nearby.

Mobile networks are constantly upgrading their equipment and when they do, some homes start to suffer.

According to the latest reports, Edinburgh is next on the list for a major mobile upgrade, warning users that their TV signal may experience occasional noise issues and a blocky picture while work is in progress.

It sounds very frustrating, but if your TV suffers from these annoying problems, there is an easy solution.

Actually part of some of the UK’s largest mobile networks, Restore TV offers a free filter that you can install yourself and should help clear up the picture and sound on TVs.

Restore TV says they will send the filter to anyone responsible for their own antenna.

Full instructions are included with the company, even for further advice online or over the phone.

In most cases, applying the filter will resolve any TV interference. However, if this is not the case and you qualify, Restore TV may be able to have a technician come to your home at no charge.

A spokesperson for Freeview told Express.co.uk: “As some frequencies used by mobile services are close to those used for TV, it is possible that mobile broadband services could disrupt TV signals, especially if mobile operators perform upgrades in the local environment.

“If viewers experience new TV interference after such work, Restore TV is an independent program created to overcome interference from TV received through an antenna, such as Freeview.

“Restore TV can broadcast filters for free that prevent the cellular signal from interfering with your broadcast TV signal.”

And Ben Roome, chief executive of Restore TV, added: “We know how important TV is to inform, entertain and provide welcome company. Restore TV exists to ensure we can all continue to watch TV for free as mobile services are improved in the UK.”

“In most cases, fitting the filter will resolve any issues, but if not, we may also be able to arrange a follow-up visit by a Restore TV technician at no cost, subject to suitability.”
