You could argue all day long about the merits of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but there’s no denying that Sony was more ambitious when it came to their new controller. Xbox boss Phil Spencer will admit it himself, as he previously applauded Sony’s work on the DualSense controller, but now he seems to be taking it a step further. While discussing future Xbox accessory plans on the most recent Kinda Funny Gamescast, Spencer once again praised Sony’s gamepad and seemed to point out that he envisioned an update to the Xbox Series X/S controller that could add some DualSense features.
When I think about our hardware roadmap, and I really like the evolution of Liz Hamren’s team and the work they’ve done. We are certainly thinking of different types of devices that can bring more games to more places. There’s probably some work we’re going to work on [the] controller. I think Sony did a good job with their controller and we’re looking at that a bit and [think] there are things we need to do. But [we’re] probably not in the more custom made accessories at the moment.
It will be interesting to see what form a future Xbox controller could take. Could Microsoft update their standard gamepad with additional features, or could we maybe see a new Xbox Elite controller? Spencer previously hinted that the latter was probably more likely…
Not all our controllers have exactly the same capabilities. The Elite has the buttons on the back and all. We can’t turn the [Xbox] controller inside out because there are so many expectations about how it should work now, [but] we can innovate on top of that.
What do you think of Xbox fans? Would you buy an Xbox controller with DualSense-like features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers? Or are you happy with something more basic?
