Like Brian Helgeland’s LA confidential approaching its 25th anniversary, the director has spoken with the bell about scrapped plans for a possible sequel in the wake of the film’s critical and commercial success, including at one point a role for the late Chadwick Boseman.

Helgeland revealed that he was working on a story for the sequel with James Ellroy, who wrote the novel the first film was based on, and managed to get original stars Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce on board. He kept saying he also signed up Chadwick Boseman to play a young cop, an actor whose career he helped launch with his Jackie Robinson biopic. 42.

When Helgeland presented the idea to Warner Bros. presented, the studio sadly turned him down: “We worked it all out. It was great. And Warners succeeded.”

Since then, further attempts have been made to continue the adventures of Bud White and Ed Exley, with CBS making a pilot starring Mark Webb, Brian J. Smith and Walton Goggins, which unfortunately was not picked up by the network.
