Could more Steam Deck pre-orders become available today? Last from Valve (Image: VALVE)

The Steam Deck was only unveiled a few days ago, but it has already generated a huge amount of hype and excitement. The portable PC gaming machine promises to play the latest AAA games and at a fraction of the price of a typical rig. The Steam Deck prices start from £349 for the entry-level machine.

The Steam Deck was unveiled on Thursday, with pre-orders on Friday.

When Steam Deck preorders first went live, there were specific pre-order requirements.

Those wishing to pre-order a Steam Deck must have made a Steam purchase before June 2021.

While those who wanted to reserve a Steam Deck had to log in with their Steam account and pay a reservation fee.

Despite all these requirements, Steam Deck pre-orders sold out quickly, and there have been reports of scalpers trying to sell pre-orders for exorbitant amounts of eBay.

One of the most expensive eBay listings for a Steam Deck reservation was a whopping $4,000.

The Steam Deck will be released in December, but could Valve open pre-orders for the console again?

Well, Valve said some pre-order requirements were only in effect for the “first 48 hours of pre-orders”.

On the FAQ page for Steam Deck reservations, there is a section labeled “why can’t my account reserve until Sunday?”

In answering that question, Valve said, “We are aware of potential unauthorized resellers, and as an added safeguard to ensure a fair ordering process, we have added a requirement that the reserver have made a purchase before June 2021 on Steam available for the first 48 hours of pre-order.”

Today (Sunday 18th July) at 6pm UK time it will be 48 hours since Steam Deck pre-orders first became available, which is when some restrictions on ordering will be lifted.

While Valve hasn’t confirmed that more inventory will be available then, it would be a surprise if when these restrictions were lifted, there wasn’t any new inventory for this new influx of shoppers to buy.

If there’s no new stock available today and you weren’t available to pre-order a Steam Deck until now, Valve has some advice for you.

The makers of Half-Life and Portal said, “You can add Steam Deck to your wishlist and we’ll notify you when it’s available for general purchase.”
