Exhibitors criticize Disney as Black Widow box office plummets

While Disney celebrated apparent success with streaming and theatrical release of Black Widow The Marvel Studios release, which grossed nearly $220 million during its opening weekend, suffered a significant drop at the box office its second weekend, causing the National Association of Theater Owners to slammed Disney over its hybrid release model.

Black Widow dropped 67% at the North American box office in its second weekend (the steepest drop for any Disney-distributed MCU film), grossing $26.25 million as it lost first place to the newly released Space Jam: A New Legacy ($31.65 million opening).

“[The release] ignores that Premiere Access revenues are not new-found money, but have been brought forward from a more traditional PVOD window, which is no longer an option,” a NATO statement read (via Deadline). “Despite claims that this pandemic-era makeshift release strategy was a success for Disney and the simultaneous release model, it shows that an exclusive theatrical release means more revenue for all stakeholders in every cycle of the film’s life.”

“Based on preview earnings, compared to the same titles, Black Widow could have opened for anywhere between $97 million and $130 million,” the statement continues.
