eFootball announced as KONAMI’s free-to-play, cross-platform soccer game

Following on from previous rumors that KONAMI’s next football game would be free-to-play, the Japanese publisher has officially announced eFootball, confirms that this is the case.

Seitaro Kimura, eFootball series producer at KONAMI Digital Entertainment, said:

Starting with the strong foundation of Unreal Engine, which has allowed us to massively overhaul player expression, we made some changes to virtually create a new football game engine that will power eFootball for years to come. With the added power of next-generation consoles and working closely with elite soccer players, eFootball delivers our most tense and realistic gameplay yet. We’ll be sharing specific gameplay details next month, so stay tuned.

The new game, the first in the series to be built with Unreal Engine technology, will be available digitally only from early fall on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows 10, and PC Steam. , with Android and iOS to follow later. KONAMI plans to roll out several eFootball features, including full-fledged crossplay, following the roadmap below.

early autumn:

  • All-new gameplay experience powered by Unreal Engine
  • Matchmaking between generations (i.e. PlayStation5 vs. PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S vs. Xbox One)
  • Local matches with FC Barcelona, ​​​​Juventus, FC Bayern, Manchester United and more

Autumn:

  • Cross-platform matchmaking between consoles and PC (i.e. PlayStation 5 vs. Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 vs. PC Steam, etc.)
  • Team building mode (Name TBC) opened – build your own team by acquiring players
  • Online Leagues (TBC Name) Opened – Bring your original team and compete in a global competitive league
  • Match Pass System – Earn items and players by playing eFootball

Winter:

  • Added mobile controller support
  • Full cross-platform matchmaking on all available platforms, including mobile when using a compatible controller
  • Professional and amateur esports tournaments begin

According to the developers, a new technology called Motion Matching will transform the huge range of movements that real players can make into a series of animations, while selecting the most accurate ones in real time.
