AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution was added to SteamVr today via a new mod, allowing VR games to take advantage of AMD’s recently released scaling technique.
The new mode, which was created by fholger, is a custom openvr_api.dll that allows users to apply AMD FSR to many SteamVR games, as long as they use D3D11. The modder also provided some comparison screenshots for: Skyrim VR and Fallout 4 VR, also highlighting that the quality in many games may not be optimal due to various issues.
This is an effort experiment and hack to bring this upscaling technique to VR games that don’t support it natively. Please understand that the approach taken here cannot guarantee the optimum quality that FSR could theoretically be capable of. AMD has specific recommendations where and how to put FSR in the render pipeline. Due to the nature of this generic hack, I cannot guarantee or verify that all of these recommendations for any given game will be met. Don’t judge the quality of FSR by this mod alone
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution is currently supported in a handful of games, such as Resident Evil Village, and more titles will be released in the future that support AMD’s upscaling technique. Even if games don’t natively support it, it’s possible to add FSR support to almost all Vulkan games, as we reported yesterday.
