The universe of the exorcist is a surprisingly detailed and worn-out thing for horror fans and it seems like filmmaker David Gordon Green knows that as he wants a fresh approach with his recently announced entry in the franchise.
In 2018, Green released his version: Halloween, which ignored the other films released in the franchise and served as a direct sequel to the 1978 original. Now it will take that approach with a new entry in the exorcist franchisee.
“the exorcist was written,” said Green in an interview with Total Film. “That was one of my pandemic projects. It’s not inaccurate [that it will be a sequel to the original film]. i love all exorcist movies. And not only do I like them, I think they can all fall into acceptable mythology for what I do. It’s not like I’m saying ‘pretend’ The exorcist 2 never happened.’ That’s fine to exist. They are all fine to exist, and I enjoy them all.”
“It’s another fun legacy to be a part of, and hopefully we’ll get that going in the near future,” he continued. “That’s a lot of research, rather than just impulsive screenwriting. That’s one you talk about with a lot of people. You read a lot of books and do an awful lot of interviews. There was such a dramatic authenticity to what that original movie is. is a lot more than I expected to get into. And I think I was naive to think that. But it was really exciting to be involved in a lot of those conversations that you’re in.”
